Kenya Methodists University (KeMU) has released a list of what their students are supposed to wear at the university.

In a memo dated January 5, 2023, KeMU’s Dean of Students, Esther Mbaabu, stated that all students must follow the dress code.

The dean of Students wishes to encourage all students to adopt a style of dressing and appearance that would be acceptable in various fields of work and society in general,” the memo reads.

The memo included a list of what Mbaabu described as improper attire at the institution during study, dining, or any other university function.

Therefore, the following, though not exhaustive, would be considered as inappropriate dress and/or appearance:

Male Students

  • Rasta/dreadlocks (Wear properly groomed hair)
  • Plaited hair.
  • Earrings.
  • Untucked shirts.
  • Vests that show bare chest.
  • Hats/caps in classes and offices.

Female Students

Below is prohibited:

  • Tumbo cut (exposing their belly and naval)
  • Bare backs. (exposing their backs)
  • Miniskirts (any skirt above the knee line).
  • A skirt whose slits is above knee line.
  • Dresses/ blouse with neckline running down more than 4 inches.
  • Body tight trousers.
  • See through clothes.
